Political Support
We have been working with politicians at the national and local level to bring fairer democratic participation to migrants in the UK.
Check out below our current supporters and how you can support the campaign! Ask more councillors to pass our motion! and MPs to support us in Parliament!
Early Day Motion
Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, tabled an Early Day Motion showing support for the extension of the right to vote to all residents across the UK. Your can see the tabled EDM here and the MPs who have signed it already.
The more MPs who sign it, the more chances we have of getting Government attention and changing legislation.
Please help us by asking your MP to sign the EDM today.
Parliamentary Support

In the 2021 Labour Party Conference, Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer MP, said he is in
“favour of voting rights for everybody who has contributed to our society” (watch the video).
This position has subsequently been endorsed by the Labour Party’s National Policy Forum (page 62).
Labour MP Alex Norris proposed an amendment to the Elections Bill asking for the right to vote to be extended to all settled residents in General Elections (amendment NC14).
-
The Liberal Democrats made residence-based voting rights a manifesto commitment in their 2024 General Election campaign (page 100):
“extend the right to full participation in civil life, including the ability to stand for office or vote in UK referendums, local elections, and general elections, to all EU citizens with settled status, and to anyone else who has lived in the UK for at least five year and has the right to stay permanently.”
Back in 2021, when the Elections Bill was first announced, MDP received support from Liberal Democrat peers in the House of Lords. Lord Shipley tabled an amendment calling on all liable to pay council tax to have the vote. -
The Greens also made residence-based voting rights a manifesto commitment in their 2024 General Election campaign:
Calling for residence-based voting rights, votes for 16 year-olds, proportional voting, and replacing the House of Lords with an elected second chamber.
Local Authority Support
In order to push residence-based voting rights onto the political agenda, we have been working with local authorities across the UK to promote our campaign.
Councillors across the UK have put forward our motion for residence-based voting rights in their local authority lending their support for all their residents to have a democratic say in their home, the UK. Join them and call on the Government to implement a residence-based voting rights system.
