Our Home Our Vote
Over 4 million residents cannot vote in General Elections in the UK.
Over 1 million residents in England and Northern Ireland do not have the right to vote at all.
We are campaigning for all residents in the UK - regardless of where they were born, to have the right to vote and have a say in issues that affect them.
Why We Believe in Residence-Based Voting Rights
A FAIR APPROACH
Democracy is best served, when it is fair and equal. It works best when we can all participate. Yet, our current voting system only enfranchises some migrant voters; creating unequal access to democracy across migrant communities. Migrants are key members of our society. They must have a say in how they are governed, especially at the local level where change is so directly seen.
A SIMPLER SYSTEM
Our current voter rules are unnecessarily complicated. The different rules on who can vote in what elections causes confusion amongst voters, activists and even politicians. Extending the franchise ensures that this complex system is simplified, making voting easier and more accessible for all. Find out if you can vote here.
GLOBAL STANDING
The UK is already behind the curve. Countries like Belgium, New Zealand, and South Korea are starting to implement residence-based voting systems. In Scotland and Wales, residence-based voting is a reality for all residents, but this does not extend to England and Northern Ireland causing confusion and inequitable access in our democratic systems. England and Northern Ireland should extend the franchise and make the United Kingdom a global leader in truly democratic representation.
WE HAVE THE SUPPORT
People and politicians across the country support our campaign for residence-based voting rights. Over 50% of people support votes for all residents with support growing to 64% for residence-based voting rights in local elections. You can see the polling here.
Political support for our campaign is also growing with 20 local authorities having passed motions in support of votes for all. Click here to see the political support we’ve garnered over the last few years.
Our friends and neighbours come from all over the world - like Brazil, the US, Syria, Ukraine, and many many more. They live, work, study, and pay taxes in the UK, yet they have no right to vote at all. We are campaigning for all residents in the UK - regardless of where they were born, to have the right to vote, and have a say in issues that affect them.
