MPower: Political Leadership Programme Launch #2
On Tuesday 3rd December we had our MPower: Political Leadership Programme Launch Celebration!
MPOWER…
This programme provides the skills, resources and knowledge to first-generation migrants in their politics journeys to become local councillors. It seeks to create a ‘new generation’ of migrant voices in power, and a strong and connected political migrant community.
Migrants have been continually excluded and demonised in the political sphere, and it is our aim with this programme to change this.
Migrants are also affected by housing, by education, by social services. They often face issues with these topics to a higher extent, because of a hostile environment that makes assimilation in the United Kingdom unbearably difficult.
Our brilliant 13 leaders have been selected as they hope to change this, and hope to continue to champion migrant rights at a local government level.
Ten sessions will take place from January to April 2025, including everything from knowledge of the electoral process, working within our communities, safeguarding our communities and public-speaking coaching!
LAUNCH…
The Launch Celebration saw the coming together of over 40 individuals, including our MPower leaders, local councillors, community organisers, and many more! We shared food, drink, music, speeches and dance.
It provided more information about what this programme seeks to do. It allowed this year’s leaders to introduce themselves, and meet others who are fighting in the same corner. It also created a strong sense of hope in the future of politics.
We spoke of a future that included migrant voices in the political sphere. We discussed future systems that were based on representation and justice. We danced for a future that was kinder to the new generations.
Stay up to date with how our future migrant councillors get along on our MPower webpage here and @migrantdemos on all socials.
Big thank you to Alex and the Tia Maria Team who extended a warm Brazilian welcome to all of the attendees!
